If the US passed the death penalty for 1st degree murder and attempted or premeditated murder, do you think it would affect our crime rates?

    no. but i bet a crap load of people would at least think about it when they're premeditating their next victim. and i bet things would be safer on the outside of the jail houses or more clever if killers decide to ban together and make crime rates much harder to stop with a criminal mastermind who's not catch able.

    I won't reiterate what's already been said, but here's what hasn't: Most studies show no decrease in crime in states where the death penalty exists. In fact, violent crime increases. I don't know if that is coincidence or what. But to figure out if the death penalty really has any deterrance effect on the average citizen, just look at your question. You didn't even know we had the death penalty. If you were going on a shooting spree, would you have taken your possible execution into consideration?

    .. I have no idea what the hell you're asking.

    1st degree murder IS premeditated murder, and the death penalty already exists for it in most states.

    BTW, this topic is for the BOOK Crime and Punishment, not the punishment of crime.
