Kilauea Valcano in Hawaii (on the big Island) was and is still the highest mountain in the world...it is just most of it is under water. I don't know if that was known before or after the discovery of Mt. Everest. Kilauea was discovered before Everest.

Trick question. The tree falling in a forest makes no sound if there's no-one to hear it . . . or not. So Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world whether or not anybody knows about it . . . or not. Sometimes unhelpful answers are helpful.

Just because Mt.Everest was not discovered, doesn't mean it wasn't there. It has been the highest peak in the world for a long time.

Mount Everest. Just because it wasn't yet discovered doesn't mean it didn't exist.

I don't mean to be snarky, but Mt. Everest's height has nothing to do with whether it was discovered or not. And as far as discovered, the people living next door to it always knew it was there. Just like the Hawaiians living in the vicinity of Kilauea knew it was there to. (The occasional lava outburst was a dead giveaway.) If you meant what mountain Europeans thought was the tallest mountain before -- I'd guess some variety of Alp.
