Rubbing Alcohol will disolve the oils that cause poison oak and it will help to dry out any existing sores. Make sure you allow the sores to air out so they can try without infection.

I also use bleach, straight from the jug, when I have poison ivy anywhere but my face. Pour some bleach into a bowl, dip a clean washcloth in it then rub vigorously on the affected areas. Be sure not to use a good washcloth as the bleach (undiluted) can cause materials to tear up. I usually buy some cheap washcloths at the start of summer and keep them on hand. Hope this helps.

You should obviously try to have as little of your skin exposed as possible when getting rid of poison oak, since it is through physical contact with the plant (any part of the plant!) that the rash is contracted. At the very least, this means wearing gloves, long-sleeved shirt and full-length pants. The object in trying to get rid of poison oak manually is to pull it out by the roots. The roots must be disposed of; do not burn! Inhaling fumes from burning poison oak causes far greater health problems than just the rash caused by skin contact. Another manual method for getting rid of poison oak (if it is growing on the ground, rather than in trees) is to smother it. Smothering entails cutting it back close to the ground, then placing newspapers, cardboard, old carpeting, tarps, mulch or some other covering on top of it. However, be aware that, even after they are killed, the plants remain toxic www.sitelandscaping.about.com

Do you mean the irritation on your skin? There is no way to "get rid of it." The only thing you can do is minimize the symptoms while allowing the skin irritation to heal. Keep the area dry and don't scratch it. Use some calamine lotion with benadryl. If you realize that you have just been exposed, come inside and rub the area with cool rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. The alcohol disrupts the oils. Don't use warm water until AFTER you have removed the oil, because it just opens your pores more to allow more of the toxin into your skin.

I grew up in a poison oak patch! I have tried all the remidies. Non work very well except time. But I personally found extreme heat would stop the intense itch. I still use this. But it doesn't work for everyone. I currently use very, very hot water in a directed stream. Scalding. I also have found relief from burn treatments which contain analgesics or pain relievers. All of the drying lotions and potions like Calamine lotion, only made it worse for me. For 50+ years I have been hearing that you can catch it from the weeping of the blisters caused by poison oak, but this isn't true. It is just your body's own plasma. The problem is caused by the oils on the leaves, urushiol, which causes an allergic reaction. The oil will linger on clothing, furniture and pets. Wash them once they are exposed and then yourself...quickly.

I'm 16 and I'm from Stl, MO. Now I have tried desperately for a solution to my PI/PO problem. I have gone and done significant reasearch from many websites and found, that using a BLOW DRYER will neutralize the Itching Imedeatly. I figured out that the air from the hair dryer will "itch" the rash, and the heat will bring out all the histamines. Which inreturn will stop the Itching for Hours. I would also like to suggest going to this web site. It is one of many that Deals with all the poisonous plants. http://poisonivy.aesir.com/view/welcome.html

burn it? watch out that the rest of your garden doesn't catch fire though.

its just best to let it go its course and eventually it dries up and leaves. sometimes simple cures can spread it to other parts of your body. i got it off a canvas tent bag once. you can get it from petting a dog that has been in it. its best to not scratch, yah right, and leave it alone and it will just go away.

Tecnu & Caligel guys, they even sell them together in a pack at some places. Tecnu is to be used preferably before the rash appears, like if you think or know you have been exposed to the plant. But even after the rash appears, wash it in cool- yes cool water with Tecnu. Lightly dab skin with a towel, wait until dry, then aplly the Caligel. Tecnu was originally designed to remove things like radiation from your skin. If it can do that, it can surely remove poison oak oil. That's why you want to use Tecnu as soon as possible after exposure & maybe stop the process before it starts. Caligel is amazing for itch relief & also helps very much with the drying process. I have fought with poison oak for years & I have found that this is the fastest & best way to get to get rid of it. Do not scratch! I don't care how much it itches! And do not irritate your poison oak by apllying hot water or cleaners or chemicals of any kind. It may release histamines and slow down the itch for while but opening your pours like that can allow the rash to spread or become very angry. Tecnu & Caligel.. try it.

ok to the kid in school... think about it, when you scratch the infection it feels really good right???... thats because the infection fucks up your pleasure receptors, so go ahead and spread it to your dick and rub 1 out... that should make you feel better... but there is no way to just make it go away... i kno because im extremely allergic to poison oak and i have it right now... infact its so bad it has spread to my eyelids... i just hope it doesnt contact my eyes

I have heard from many older family members that the solution they used as kids to actually "dry up" poison ivy is White Gas. I don't know where to find it, but they all say it works. You cover the area with the gas, and it will burn, but it is supposed to dry it up fast. I wish I knew where to find white gas, because this shit is itching like crazy. Does anyone know where to find it?

please don't put chemicals on your skin. they overburden your liver and in many cases cause cancer...do your research. chemicals kill. the point is to nurture and heal. there are natural ways to relieve and heal. i get poison oak really bad, and one time i had it all over my face like a rinoceros. i was desperate to find relief so i bought every product i could find but none of them worked. next i went to the doctor and they offered me steroids. no, not into that..then i went to a natural clinic and they said to take vitamin c, black walnut extract, and liquid oxygen (also called cell food) all of which i found at the health food store, and to not eat sugar while infected (sugar creates a breeding ground for inflammation). well guess what, the poison oak went away immediately. another thing that works wonders is applying wheatgrass pulp with some juice in a compress.

I know this sounds dumb, but it frickin works, take a rag with some bleach, and scrub the heck out of it. it's gone by the next day. I promise.

What NOT to do for poison ivy....steaming hot bath! I read on another website that you should take a hot bath. I did it and irritated my skin REALLY BADLY. I've been to the doctor twice. He recommends: Steroids, oatmeal bath (regular oatmeal in a sock or panty hose works well), Calamine lotion, Benadryl or prescription Visteral. I'm still itching like crazy, hope it works for you!

None worked, cortizone 10 with the cooling affect has menthal in it helps but the clerasil pads and pimple cream was amazing and once on it also slowed the itching down. Good luck to you all. it's a hoorrable thing to get.oxy10 was used as well.

i get poison oak every year bout3 times. its a bitch cuz i like to hunt so im constently in the brush in oregon. i get all red and puffy just about everywhere, not a damn thing i can do. i've gone to doctors and all that junk, nothen they have for me works. not one damn thing. the only thing that i found that helps me is a frozen shower. turn the shower on as cold as it will go and rinse every infected area. the cold water closes ur pores and rinses off the extra oil instent releaf.. frozen shower and just ride it out.
