They are two characters that share the same name. The Orc Gothmog was named after the Balrog Gothmog. Think about it, how many John's are there in the world? (yes I know jokes will follow)

You are correct. Gothmog was the king of the balrogs. The name of the orc that spat on the boulder is Dwayne. Everybody knows that.
