I think you should start with a C harmonica. Most beginner songs are written in C because it has no sharps or flats, and if you are playing the music with a C harmonica, other instruments can play along with you without having to transpose the notes or chords. It is also a responsive key. High pitched harmonicas such as F have reeds that are tight (short) and take a little getting used to, low keys like G have longer, looser reeds and sometimes the sound is sloppy. C and D are in the middle and are good choices. Also, when you get more experienced and learn to play "cross harp" (used for blues, etc.) you would be playing in the key of G when you are using a C harmonica. G is a good blues key for guitars and other instruments. A is another good blues key, so maybe get a D harmonica second.
