I think they change thier tone of voice to help the child feel more calm. When talking to a baby they make thier voices higher because i beleave that babys like higher pitched noises. They change thier voice around children just to make the children happier.

It seems that most parents, especially mothers, have a special "lullaby voice" that they use in speaking and singing to their babies: high in pitch and slow in speed. The voice is partly a product of the emotion parents feel for their child--emotion that provokes involuntary changes in facial expression and body posture, which in turn affect the sound of the voice.

It doesn’t even necessarily have to be children. When we see young life, and we see it as cute, and we sense their purity and innocence, we change our voices. A cute puppy. LoL Maybe its just our nature to do so.

it is called "motherese" and it is natural for people even other children to talk in a certain way to a young child.
