because there was nothin to smile about
everything was black and white
It's tough to smile for the exposure times needed with those (1800's) photos yo...
I think Ec's right about the exposure time - it's hard to hold a smile and any moving makes a blur. Also, pictures were serious business. They were expensive and a lot of people only ever had one in their whole lives.
Besides which everyone was constipated until the invention of laxatives in 1901*.

The film and equipment back then couldn't keep up with any movement - the photo would blur. It was much easier (and cost-effective) to have people sit in a pose they could maintain perfectly for a few seconds.
They were sitting or standing on broom handles
I was once told that old cameras worked a little differently than our technology. The people being photographed HAD to hold still for a few moments...maybe even several moments instead of for just a little "click". Hard to hold an attractive smile for that long. Better to just stare or relax one's face. But I wonder how they took pictures of babies then? Those guys NEVER hold still!
They didn't have teeth whitening products back then !
I think "cheeze" was not invented then.
Also, wars kept people depressed, they had no reason to laught.
Umm what?
In the late 1800's early 1900's exposure times for photographs were quite long. It was often standard practice to wear an uncomfortable brace that held the head steady to the back so to prevent movement during the exposure. Not the kinda thing that makes you wanna smile.
it made you look like you have class. back then emotion was unwelcome and made you go down in society to express too much. nothing like today's time. so as a result people are often seen without facial expression.
have u ever heard ,"in color" by jamey johnson? it tells why...youtube it...its a great song...
I think people took life a lot more serious back then?
