  • Fear and sex sells.
  • They want to keep us tuned in. It's the same with the weather people; they like to worry us to death when there is an oncoming storm. In the news business bad news is what they depend on to get viewers to keep tuning in. Right now it is the swine flu.
  • Good news is no news.
  • Man bites Dog is news.
  • I pondered that just last night after watching an hour of news about the swine flu...I guess it is ratings.
  • I think it is the old rule of journalism: Bad news is good news. You have the very same in all western countries. Imagine bored people would be if they only would hear good news from fine and excellent people. The average people want to consume weird stories with sex and crime. In a certain way the medias are nothing but satisfying the expectations of their public. If nobody would be interested in bad news, the medias would change very quickly.
  • Would you prefer they hide the facts and give you a rosy picture? Get real! +3
  • You're probably watching too much Fox.
  • To keep us inside our house..."where we belong" Its a scare tactic they use. but guess what I KNOW....its really not that bad out there. The sun is shining, theirs a breeze in the air...the children laugh, the adults love...a neighbor waves at me...and a bunny hops across my back yard... Life is beautiful... But they dont want you to know that "divide and conquer"
  • just like sex, fear sells
  • Same reason I stopped watching it.
  • Well, their goal certainly isn't being helpful. In spreading fear they also tend to re-awaken prejudices--including those against other cultures, the mentally ill, all sorts of 2nd-string minorities they can use to generate sensationalism (since we'd see through the more obvious prejudiced news stories). Sets us back decades in social awareness, and insults our intelligence. Also an insult to our intelligence: they can't SPELL on their tickers and they can't PRONOUNCE ordinary words correctly, let alone foreign names & places. Once upon a time these things were the most basic requirement for public consumption; now they can't manage getting it right for a 5 minute run. An embarrassment.
