In my day, we did not have sneakers - we had animal skins which had been carefully fashioned round the shape of a foot, and then stitched lovingly by my mother. Sometimes she put the name of the animal on them, in fancy stitching - like... Puma.
Then the Birkenstocks family next door disappeared, and suddenly we all got new shoes - I was quite concerned....

When I was young, there were no name brand sneakers. You could get three kinds of sneakers: Basketball Shoes, Hightop Basketball Shoes or Tennis Shoes (Tennies). Girls wore tennies, and boys wore basketball shoes.

No, but most of the time I wore P.F. Flyers or Converse.

In High School I wore Puma.

Of course not. It was better than having no sneakers at all.

We didn't have a lot of money to waste on labels, needing it for food and the mortgages.

No... Brand names in sneakers weren't such a big deal then, as they are now. As I recall I wore Keds (Keds are for kids...Keds, kids, Keds) I think were the slogans. I also wore engineer boots (boots with a buckle on the side) When I was a little older (early teens) fashion and brand names became more of a priority. The brand name clothing was more expensive, so my parents would buy them as gifts, on holidays and B-Days. When I was 13, I worked to increase my wardrobe as a caddy. Converse was the popular brand of sneaker. They were canvas back then; mine were black.
