Most people just think it's whacking on drums with sticks. Only drummers can really understand how complex and subtle drumming can be.

    They do.
Drumlines that march in Corps are considered by more than a few to be the best part of the sport.
And I have never met anyone who didn't want to be a drummer at one point.

Drummers definitely make or break a band. There need to be more of them though because if you're drummer sucks you kind of feel like you have to keep them around because it is just a blessing that you found someone that even owns a kit.

Even among most musicians that I've ever known, drummers had their own world (and apparently, it's loud & rattles!)

Travis Barker is awesome. Watching his home made videos on youtube are amazing. The way he pretty much murders his drums to songs that are not even his own shows great talent. Their talent is just more 'behind the scenes' than say... the lead singer. I personally enjoy watching a good drummer.

    Many of them do.
It is generally perceived that drummers are not as involved in the creative process of a band and guitar players, lead singers are. They are often seen as role-players.
There are of course, notable exceptions.

Some that come to mind: Lars Ulrich-Metallica, Neil Peart-Rush. Don Henley-Eagles, Phil Collins, etc.
