  • Long motorway journeys do make me sleepy sometimes. To stay alert I sometimes play mental games like trying to calculate fuel consumption figures or estimated times of arrival at various points on the route. I find if I am in serious danger of dozing, imagining in detail the consequences of a crash wakens me up wonderfully!
  • I am sure driving a car would, as I always feel sleepy in the back of them as they are so warm and comfy... I have only ever driven a motorcycle, and that has the effect of making you feel very much awake - the freezing wind, the rain, the danger of horrible injury... bracing!
  • If I'm driving a long distance alone this does happen to me at times. I make it a rule to stop every couple of hours to walk around a little and get the circulation going again, eat something with protein and of course use the facilities. This revives me. I also listen to audiobooks or music that can be sung along with. Coffee helps, but water is better.
  • I always found keeping a bottle of saline solution around helps. When you feel your eyes getting a bit glazed over pull over and refresh your eyes with a few drops of saline. It always wakes me up, especially if the saline is a bit cold.
  • Put the window down a bit, get some air on your face.
  • there is a gadget that you hang on your earlobe and will sound an alarm as soon as you start dropping your head a little bit. Could be a life saver!
  • At times. I've found that a self made high pitched screaming sound will help. At times, I'll slap myself really hard which is amusing to the drivers or passengers who are passing me.
  • Driving does not make me sleepy. Of course, I am not now driving long distances on a regular basis on short sleep. Years ago, I used to work for a company with a main office in NYC (I'm in the Boston area). I used to drive back and forth between the offices an average of three times a week. I usually would drive at night to avoid traffic, and I frequently would be on the verge of sleep as I was traveling down I-95 at 3:00am. I used to carry a bag of Red-Hot Fireballs (candy) in my glove box. If I felt tired or caught myself starting to wander, I would pop one in my mouth - always woke me right up!
  • Open the window and get some cold air going and get the loud tunes going. Sometimes stopping for a break and getting a ot coffee will work too. If I am too tired to drive I generally won't and will head for a motel 6.
  • I stay awake during my hour drive home, after work, by rolling down my window, and listening to music that I hate! Listening to music that I like sometimes makes me too comfortable. The window down makes it noisy. It also helps with the window down if it's cold! Turning the heater on makes me way too comfortable way too quick. I found some gadget that you put over your ear (like an earpiece) on the net the other day that "alerts" you with a loud noise if your head starts to fall forward while you are driving.
