2001 a space Odyssey.
The first realistic Science Fiction movie. They were a little optimistic on how advanced we would be but the special effects were fantastic for a movie made 40 years ago. i think it's better than any of todays big budget CGI monstrosities.
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. A new style of movie making and story telling using visual and audial techniques never seen or heard before in motion picture production.

it was the first movie that featured the characters actually talking (instead of a silent movie).
I pretend to have no definitive answer but I will suggest Alfred Hitchcock's " Psycho "
Why? MAJOR PLOT SPOILER!!! Among countless other reasons: "Marion Crane" is murdered a third of the way into the film. And she is the only character, up to that point, in the movie the audience can identify with. After she's gone, where does that leave the viewer? Completely in the hands of Master Hitchcock. [ And moviemakers since have picked up on the idea of NOT playing fair with the audience. ]
