It used to be that countries were considered to be great based on the amount of land they control.
We've now moved into an age where greatness in a country is defined by the positive ideas it produces -- so that would encompass both civil liberties guarantees and health care. As well as a commitment not to commit torture.
The really great thing about that is that countries' most valuable assets today are the creativity and industry of their people -- which cannot be conquered or stolen.
So everybody eventually has to come to the bargaining table. Many haven't yet, but it's a matter of time -- and a good thing, too.

All of those things make a country great, along with a balanced budget. Unfortunately, bombs are necessary.
Like schmee2369 said, until we can reclaim this country from political corruptness, this country will never be as great as it can be.

A country is great when:
-there are no living person dying from hunger
-no one is left untreated from a sickness or disease
-freedom is not a form of manipulation or control
-politic should be more morally correct
-when your not a slave for the things you own and need
-justice without the death penalty
-war as the last resort
-an economy who do great without the majority of it's citizens in debt.

Our government has become corrupt. Instead of taking care of the people here....like you said
Medical attention, retirement funds, schools, rehabilitation centers, helping mothers and children, veterans, and peace....the way a government should be. FOR THE PEOPLE.
They have decided to
Destroy, leave on the streets, deny those in medical need, thrown the veterans away, forgotten the schools, caused mothers to kill the children, and love to cause wars...massive destruction, murders...torture...give more to the already rich, and take from the middle class...taken jobs away...and are owned by big banks...
A country is great....when the people are happy.

The Scandinavian countries should be looked at as the greatest ones in the world and what makes them so is the fact that they concentrate on domestic not international problems. They look to better the life of their own citizens and don't mess with other countries. They don't blow the majority of their budget on weapons. The offer good healthcare, education, housing and other benefits to their citizens. Don't mess with anybody else. They work towards their own improvement and progress. They mind their own business and live and let live

I don't believe any country has ever reached greatness. A few have tried, but always fall short. The only time greatness will ever be achieved is when the entire planet decides war is not in anyones best interest, when governments can finally decide to work for the peoples of the world instead of for whoever can be the richest, when the people of the world are free to decide every day decisions for themselves instead of having governments decide them, when every man, woman and child on a global scale has equal access to decent health care, when no one group starves so that another can prosper..In short a global utopia and that has never been reached and has never been close. It sure isn't going to happen in our lifetimes and I seriously doubt it will ever happen. Since i don't believe in deities no country will ever be great, but we can always strive to become great. As long as others out there think greatness can be obtained at the end of a gun....no such luck.

and another thing....those torture tactics are the same that are policy for INTERRORGATIONS of OUR OWN as well....the whole world has these and quite frankly they are not the business of the peoples of any country...they is the way we stay safe here..Top Secret...and not our business otherwise , not secret to enemy...

right , IT"S sick, IT"S freedoms, IT's civil liberties, ITS SAFETY, IT's bailouts ..and by the way IT"S is of the people of the USA ....not the government NOR ITS ILLEGAL ALIENS..America is of LEGAL AMERICANS ...these used to mean America to its citizens and the world....now it means go to america for a free ride from their government and Americans expense....u better hope we got some bombs...that is the Presidents MAIN DUTY..keep Americans safe!!
