I joined, got hurt, was discharged and I'm going back. The USMC is going to have to try harder than that to get rid of me...

I would join the Swiss military, as they only defend their own country and never invade other people's. I wouldn't want to end up in Iraq or somewhere similar.

    Unfortunately I'm not Swiss.

I enlisted to join the Coast Guard 4 years ago, failed due to anti-anxiety medication, got a great job related to what I majored in at school, and haven't looked back.

Yes it was my dream from the time I was 9. In my senior year of H.S. I applied to Annapolis. I had all the required recommendations. I passed all the written tests with flying colors. I passed the psychological and almost every single part of the physical except when it came to my eyes. I was born with a severe eye poroblem that prevented me from being able to enter military service. As you could imagine I was quite disappointed that I didn't make it.

If I can do my life all over again, I would probably choose a career in the military because I could use a heavy dose of that discipline that is so lacking in me now.

Not for me. Physically not up to it, have deep moral issues with current military actions (and quite possibly all military action although that is not a fully decided point) and have a real problem following orders without question, it's that anti-authoritarian streak in me :)

Yes, I was enlisted for 4 years. 2001-2005. I joined right before 9/11. The military has great benefits and teaches loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. I learned alot from my time served but, due to current ploitical situations I got out when my time was up. I would go back once the war is over though.

I have and would again. I was in the Silent Service. for 4 of the 8 years I wasn in. I have been in 7 different combat situations. thoughtout my time starting in the first Gulf War. I was discharged from active duty because of a stupid plate in my neck. They have no place for walking Quadrapligecs. I guess. I know that I almost died and did twice on the ER table. but if I had to do it all over again I would in a heart beat.

Of course! I'm actually contemplating joining the U.S. Marines! I would proudly serve my country and fight to keep it free. The military takes a boy and turns him into a man. And it's not for cowards.

Although I am a complete and utter pacifist, if I could have some job that didn't require killing other people, I would consider it.

Perhaps I like the *idea* of being in the military, but I absolutely hate what would be required of me if I were to join: The ability to kill!

No my father and grandfather wer in the military, and they came back too damaged. My son nearly followed in thier footsteps but thankfully changed his mind. Its a job that needs to be done but why should it be at the loss of our children when members of the government wont put thier own forward.

I wouldn't consider it at this time. I don't agree with the way the US military is currently being used. The military should be here to protect America, not abroad being the police of the world.

I would never... i would become a conscientious objector.

A conscientious objector (CO) is an individual following the religious, moral or ethical dictates of her/his conscience that are incompatible with being a combatant in military service, or being part of the armed forces as a combatant organization. In the first case, conscientious objectors may be willing to accept non-combatant roles during conscription or military service. In the second case, the objection is to any role within armed forces and results in complete rejection of conscription or military service and, in some countries, assignment to an alternative civilian service as a substitute for conscription or military service. Some conscientious objectors may consider themselves either pacifist or antimilitarist. This is not to be confused with 'Persistent Objectors', which are nations whose persistent stance against a particular rule exempts them from that rule under customary international law.
