Yep..on and off for almost 20 years..I've been in treatment now 6 yrs or will be 6 June 1st. Been clean ever since.
I don't advise it as your typical pain killer, but it is very effective for that purpose. If it were perfectly legal and dosages were controlled with purity guaranteed life would be a whole lot safer than turning distribution over to organized criminals who cut it with whatever garbage and toxins they find handy.
Consider this, If water were outlawed and its distribution were turned over to organized crime you couldn't so much as bath in it unless you harvested your own from rain water.
The truth is that opiates have been part of the human experience since humans first learned of it's use. Heroin is just a less refined version of many other effective pain killers and in most instances is rather benign compared with many pain killers sold over the counter. Heroin itself doesn't damage the liver like Tylenol can. The only real downside to heroin is its extremely addictive nature. If dosages were controlled then overdose wouldn't be such the issue it is now.

I can't understand why someone would try a drug that is almost guaranteed to addict you.

No and I can't imagine why anyone would. The only reason I would use a drug like that is pain. A few years ago I had a very severe pain from a blood clot. It was so bad that morphine didn't even work and I was desperate. It never occurred to me that heroin would be a good choice.
Besides morphine makes you itch and puke. I assume heroin does the same. It doesn't sound very attractive to me.
