Socratic seminar is a teaching method employed in a handful of schools and universities around the world. Basically, the students arrive at class having read something. The teacher/professor asks a leading question, and then the students discuss the question's relevance to the reading. Hopefully, they arrive at some conclusion.

Watch "The Paper Chase" (the movie) and you will see a really excellent portrayal of the Socratic method. It's inherently sadistic; the technique is to ask relevant questions until you overturn the assumptions of the victim--ah, student. Socrates himself was executed because most of the people in his home town thought it was a good idea.
