Question

Help answer this question below.

Occasionally, my 96 f-150 will not start, any other time, it fires right off. When this happens, I've noticed the fuel gage pegs out. And, if i simply leave the key on for a few minutes, it will return to a correct reading, and it will start. What's up?

I agree with checking your battery connections. I'd also check the other ends, where they fasten to the solenoid and frame or block. It isn't uncommon for oil to drip onto those connections as they tend to be on or near the engine. Sometimes they get so dirty they don't make good contact anymore.

Fords are notorious for dashboard shorts and particularly in the fuel gauge. All of my Ford vehicles had fuel gauge problems in their later years (Fairmont, Escort, Tempo, 2 Rangers). My grandmothers LTD had problems too. If you don't want to end up walking down the road with a gas can, start writing down your mileage every time you fill up and fill it again when you've gone about 200 miles.
