Help answer this question below.
It's NOT. You CANNOT physically become addicted to marijuana. It's NOT possible. There isn't anything addictive in it. And as far as it being psychologically addictive, well that's a person to person thing. I don't believe that it is extremely addicting in that way either. I do not know ANYONE that had ANY physical or mental difficulty stopping smoking after they had for a long time. It's REALLY not difficult to quit. You don't get withdrawals. You get craving, but it's the same way you get a craving for pizza or anything else like that. So yeah. In conclusion, NO. You can't get addicted.
Yes.
You don't really get addicted to the chemicals, per se (as you do with alcohol); you get addicted to the "good" feelings that it gives you, and you want to feel that good, all the time.

It is no more or less addicting then any other form of altering ones mood.We tend to blame the drug when one becomes addicted, when it is actually ones personality that causes that.People with this type of personality can be addicted to many different things. It is easy to blame outside forces and find all the pertaining facts to back up ones opinion, but the facts might not be reliable.
As a current marijuana addict, I can say it is extremely addictive. It is not physically addictive, as drugs such as cocaine and crack cocaine etc. are, but if you enjoy the sensation of a marijuana high, you will probably do it again, and again, and again. This sequence of events often leads loss of other activities in your life, and when you try to quit taking marijuana, you feel as if there are not many entertaining things to do without being high.
Marijuana is highly addictive if you enjoy the high.
yes it is.
Nope.
oo
Only psychologically.
I haven't smoked a joint since February of '07 and I'm no worse for the wear. Now I wouldn't mind a nice joint but if I don't I could care less. Alcohol and tobacco are physically addictive and weaning one self from these substances is a much harder struggle. Those other two substance are way badder for you too.
It's fairly easy for someone to discontinue use. However very mild discomfort is sometimes reported.

I think marijuana is addicting or so many people would stop smoking it. THC is in it and it gives the person a buzz or relaxes the body.
from personal experience and those close to me, it is not physically addictive.
I have too noticed anger issues that I am beginning to associate with marijuana. Things upset me more than is reasonable, little things can get me incredibly angry in seconds; this in turn makes me want to induce the high to feel okay, or normal, which is an addictive tendency.
The life style is so easy and for the most part fun that once one becomes accustomed to being a heavy daily marijuana user, the idea of stopping is unthinkable, and is not much fun for the first few days of sobriety.
After over a year straight of daily heavy abuse, my spelling ability, once exceptional, has taken a hit (no pun intended), I am also less adept at structuring sentences on paper. Another aspect that I attribute to marijuana use is that there are more frequent mistakes in my speech, such as combining words that are next to each other unintentionally and unintelligibly.
Marijuana is addictive, and periods of addiction are quite enjoyable and not harmful as long as one can regain control, many say that they can control themselves and believe that their entire life without altering their damaging habits to a safe consumption rate of marijuana. For example, if the habit is like having a glass or two of wine on the weekend, and one does not crave it or feel it is needed to feel normal, it can be considered nonaddictive. However if alcohol had the same 'well it is a drug so even the most casual use must be signs of addiction'-connotation that society sees in pot, almost everyone would be considered and alcoholic, and in other words, an addict.
I wrote this quite high on marijuana :)
I am a certified D&A counselor. I have become convinced after working in this field for 10 years, with several hundered addicts, that there is a physical addiction to mj. Withdrawals are similar, and often worse, than quitting smoking cigarettes. It seems to depend on how much you smoke, how often, and for how long. The scientific research is available, but many people who want to keep smoking refuse to accept it. Marijuanna has ruined many people's lives.
I believe it is addicting. My boyfriend says he will stop and he does for a few days and then he's right back on it. It may not be physically addicting but it does something to you. I want him to stop so badly and i tell him i'll leave if he doesn't stop and i have left and he stops for a little while and then starts doing it again. I'll i can do i guess is leave and stay gone. He doesn't believe he's addicted or in denial. I know he is!
Not at all. I smoke heavily, but have always been able to quit for several months on end without any withdrawl.
It is as addictive as anything you like to do... ie. fishing, answerbag, eating, sleeping, etc...
It can often be psychologically addictive, and though not physically 'addictive,' it can be habit-forming.
Of course it is...some people try to justify it by saying that is is only psychologically addicting, not physically, but I don't think that washes. My cousin was allowed by his parents to grow it at home, so that he wouldn't go on to hard drugs...mistake...not only did he become addicted to the marijuana, but the company he kept and the mental doors that taking it opened, led to him adding heroin to his addictions, then armed robbery. He has spent time in prison, taught his son to run drugs with him, and still smokes the weed.
Yes,it is called a gateway drug for a reason,,,not physically addictive though.
well, since you wanted "the real" ...
I can say for sure yes. I was a late bloomer with regards to trying drugs (many of my friends had already at least tried pot by the time I did as a sophomore in college. So "late" maybe a relative term.) Marijuana/cannabis/pot is one of the most confusing drugs. It gives the euphoric feeling without the drawbacks of other drugs. For instance, no hangover like alcohol. However, it does more than that. It affects how you think about things. I started getting better grades in college after I started smoking. I became less stressed out about the everyday nuissances. It allowed me to think in a way that was much more separated from my established perspectives. That, I think, was one of the most addictive things I had ever experienced. It started a fire in me that I constantly try to put out by learning more, and all that does is leave me with a bigger fire.
.
In comparison to other drugs, pot is much safer. Prescriptions kill approx. 100,000 people per year (ppy) while alcohol kills approx. 140,000 ppy. Cocaine kills approx. 10,000 ppy and pot approx. ZERO ppy. This is part of the reason why I choose to smoke now instead of drink. In fact, I hardly ever drink anymore and other than cigarettes, pot is the only "drug" I use to get a head change.
.
The bottom line is yes, it is habit forming. But not in the same sense as cigarettes or alcohol. It can give you the stress relief that cigarettes give combined with the head change of alcohol with next to none of the side effects. There are only 2 reasons I can think of that make pot still an "illegal" drug. 1) It works and therefore if it was legal would lead to a higher increase of use, I believe
2) Companies that make profit want it illegal so you have to buy things like aspirin or alcohol because you (probably) don't know how to make either of those, but it's quite easy to grow a pot plant. (As well as other products like paper.)
YES and NO! ITS BOTH. im addicted to pot. if im not then how come when i stop smoking for like 3 days i cant fucking sleep i cant fucking eat any time im always pissed off. WTF i'd fucking call those withdrawls. how ever my homie been blazin since he was in diapers(no lie hes a norte) and he has no trouble quitting eating sleeping and being just so happy go lucky..(as long as i dont wear blue) but anyways yeah there u go. the truth.
It's mentally addictive not physically addictive. But Caffeine is more addicting than pot.
Everyones written about this already, but alot of people i know use pot to get to sleep, and since quitting pot find it very difficult to get to sleep. Just thought id chuck that in.
I am a smoker, but I haven't been since I found out I was pregnant in June '07... I'm due in February. I will not be smoking again until I am finished breast feeding. I had not problem stopping. I still want to because I do like the feeling of being high.
But as far as it being addictive... of all of the people I KNOW smoke (and there are a LOT), I've only ran into one person who I would say had a "problem." He smoked all day everyday. He allowed it to consume his life and he lost his wife, job, and house because if his addictive personality. He was addicted to pills (Oxycotton, Xanax Bars, Percocet, Lortab... whatever he could get his hands on), but if he couldn't get the pills, he always had a weed back-up, he didn't like to drink.

it's not addicting like any other drug but once you try it, you may want to crave it once in a while.
I don't believe it's physically addictive like nicotene, heroin, cocaine, etc. However, just like TheSandMan420 said, it is mentally addictive to many people just like anything enjoyable can be. I use to smoke pretty much everyday and when I quit it bothered me just b/c I was so use to being high and not dealing with reality lol so naturally I missed the feeling, but it's been just over a month since I've quit and I'm completely fine.
God Bless Everybody.
Marijuana does not physically addict you, unless you smoke everyday for a couple months, then you may feel sick when stopping for a couple days, but it is much easier to get over than cigarettes. It is, although, mentally addicting, just like anything enjoyable can.
Man hell no its not addictive. I smoked everyday for 4 years. And im not talkina bowl pack im talkin blunts a day. And i stopped with no problem for 4 months. B4 i realized i was crazy because all it does is make your life better.
Not really, you should take a look at this article. It gives a spiritual insight into the root cause of addictions http://www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/mentalhealth/addiction/
I dunno. But people do sometimes get psychologically addicted to it. I've smoked a ton of the stuff when I was younger and I could always take it or leave it. But I know people who have made it such a part of their lives that they can't fall asleep at night any more without getting stoned first.
Can you imagine how differant the answers here would be if they were only answered by people with experience, instead of people who read PTA pamphlets?
As for what is in it that causes addiction, well, the chemical is called THC, but that's not important. Pot, like many other things (TV, work, shopping, etc...) affect the way we perceive time. They block out the past and future and move you into the present moment. That's addictive property. To do it naturally is fine, because that comes with discipline. To do it with an external agent is to tread on thin ice.
It's more of a dependency. As your body builds a tolerance to marijuana it also develops a dependency. Your body is 'shocked' more or less when you starve it of THC.
As pot dealers are the most unreliable people on the planet, any pot smoker will tell you the woes experienced when their unreliable dealer can't come through with the goods.
Many people on here are squabbling and debating this topic. Agreed, the symptoms of withdrawl are far less than any other drug, but i assure you first hand marijuana addiction does exist.
I was at one stage a full time pot smoker and let me tell you about the withdrawl side effects experienced by me, and everyone I've known in the same situation.
*Feeling cold and clammy with hot flushes
*Unreasonably sweaty
*Immense difficulty getting to sleep
*Angered easily
*Mild loss of rational thought
*Loss of appetite (in fact some extreme users cannot stomach food unless they're high)
*Mild nausea
*Headaches
*Some Flu-like symptoms
*Anemic appearance
*Vastly increased desire for nicotine
These symptoms last around 5 to 10 days.
Hope this helps
Psychologically yes. No one gets bad anxiety from having withdrawals from pizza. THC is a drug. Not a bad one or anything, but it is mind altering and can be psychologically addictive because the state produce by THC and all the other cannabinoids within the flowers.
marijuana isnt physically addictive. but i am mentally addictive to it because im used to smoking everytime i feel sad or feel really shitty. i cud quit but i love being high.
well like everyone sez its not addictive and i aint had no craving ever! but i do want a spliff all the time every time i sit in the garden i think to my self ... i could do with a fatty rite about now! but thats as far as it goes! for me anyways
I think it depends on your perspective of things in life. I care a lot about school and being active at work. I smoke maybe every once a week, and right now the stuff I have is extremely good. Yet I don't feel like smoking it because I don't want my life to be super baked all the time. I have my respect towards my parents and family. So I only smoke if I want to relax or go to a party. So I don't think its addictive at all, unless you make it addictive.
Even coffee is more addictive than marijuanna. Caffeine withdrawal cause headaches, other discomfort and negative changes in mood. This is actual physical withdrawal...as in with cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs - not just illegal - but even sleeping pills, pain-killers, anti-depressants, etc...
Marijuanna addiction is purely mental. If you enjoy the feeling you get when you are high - you may get the craving, urge, desire...whatever you want to label it...but NOT physical withdrawal...you may call that psychological withdrawal - hence, psychological addiction to the drug...but this is very vague - depending on the particular individual, severity of the craving for it, and overall addictive personality.
Therefore, I DO NOT think marijuanna is addictive.
refer to all the other questions on the site that are the exact same as this one...
Marijuana is not addictive. If people enjoy it, they make a habit of using it. I enjoy video games, music, and other things that I wouldn't quit because I enjoy. People who don't stop smoking weed don't do it because they're addicted, but because they enjoy it.
Yes, As ad"dick"ive as scratching your balls
I'm addicted to petting my cat. I did it once, and it felt so nice, that I wanted to do it again. Now, I pet her every day. When I'm out of town for a long time, visiting in-laws or on business trips, I miss petting her and having her sleep on my feet.
Marijuana is not addictive, it is habitual, as are all things that relax you and feel nice. Just because something is habit forming, doesn't mean it's bad. Sex is habit forming also, and I'm all for that as well.
