  • Only on the dead--an autopsy (also known as a post-mortem examination or necropsy) is a medical investigation of a corpse to determine the cause of death. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopsy
  • Autopsies are solely for the dead. A living person can get a biopsy done. Hope this helps.
  • The other point regarding an autopsy is that various organs are removed for examination including dissection. Once the process has started, no one could survive an autopsy.
  • Autopsies can be pretty drastic -- not unlike skinning a fish or cutting up a turkey (including taking out the innards). The methods used in an autopsy would kill a live person. You just wouldn't go around doing that to a living human being. This is also why autopsies can be hard on the dead person's survivors, just thinking of their loved one going through all that. Of course, if the person is still alive, there are better, less invasive ways of gathering information or evidence: Examinations, X-rays, MRIs, monitors, tissue samples, blood work, medical history, questioning the patient if possible.
  • An autopsie is to find the cause of death, hard to do if your not dead :-p
  • Aren't autopsies for the dead?
  • Are you familiar with the reason for an autopsy? It is to find out why the person died. What could you find out by cutting into a living person? You will get screaming... that is all.
  • well since the purpose of an autopsy is to find out how a person died, then I would hope that they are not performed on the living
  • just the dead people
