There are different kinds of filters that go on the respirators for certain purposes. In one job we had to wear an SO2 respirator, as the process gave off amazing amounts of it. You could type it into google and look at one of the company's sites. They will give you a rough idea of what the different filters are used for. It is wise to know which one you need before embarking on the purchase.

Both half-face & full face respirators can be fitted with cartridges that block or absorb many chemicals, irritants, dusts, and mists.
SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) are full-face, air supplied respirators, like firefighters wear.

Are you referring to the ones to prevent pollunts or keep the air clean.
