Sadly, that happened to me. Only it was more painful because I had to actually give the dog away. :((
I got this nice apartment in 2004, planned on getting a dog and never did. A year goes by and I decide I want to adopt one. So I adopted this black Great dane/black lab mix (he was SO beautiful, gazelle-like and very well trained and such a sweetheart!) and that night I got a memo sent to all residents under my door saying that unless you were "grandfathered" already with a pet, they were allowing NO MORE PETS! And then listed what the penalties were, fines on your rent per day you have the pet. :((
Well, he didnt bark and didnt jump in the apartment so I thought I could keep him a secret. He was HUGE like marmaduke but a gentle giant! I called him Mack, like a Mack Truck LOL! Anyway after a month he was getting hard to conceal and the paranoia was killing me that I'd get caught... someone eventually saw me with him outside and reported me. Only they let it go on for about a week without telling me and I should have read that fine print regarding those penalty fines added to your rent.......... $200 PER DAY you still have the pet. That was an expensive life lesson. I had no choice but to give him a new home. :(( I still miss the big guy!
I now own my own home and are looking to adopt again next year but I just wish I could have my Mack back....
No, never. I love my pets too much. I wouldn't move anywhere where pets are not allowed.
I have a dog and the new landlord where I live hates dogs. She's looking for any little thing to evict everyone who has a dog. Last winter I tried to move to another city for financial reasons and out of 100 landlords only 2 allowed pets and of course they had no openings. I just don't get why they are so against having pets. I even have a doctor's note that says I need one and landlords have said "I don't give a crap..I don't care what note you have..no pets". If I am willing to pay the deposit and all then I should be allowed to have one but sadly if Scrappy dies I won't get another one because it's too hard to find a place to live around here
Yeah,Those people TOTALLY SUCK! I lived in an apartment complex for almost 4 years that was like that.I mean,WHAT DO SOME people have against pets???If you take care of them,I see no reson for complaint, and I DO understand charging a pet deposit because your pet might destroy some property at one time or another, but you get that money back(Supposedly)if there's no damage to the property when you move out.Whew! Just MADDNESS,I tell you!*
I would NEVER EVER EVER give up my animals. You can't put a price on them.
When Apartment or House-hunting, if I see "No pets" I just pass on by it. And the people who list houses and apartments that don't allow pets are probably not animal lovers anyways.

That is so sad.

I would have taken them to court. That's ridiculous. The apartment isn't worth being sad. I would have found myself a new home before I found the dog a new home.

Sometimes situations are like that, though, because when you have no choice but to stay in the apartment for financial reasons,or live homeless. At least if you give the pet up for adoption,he continues to have a home, and SO DO YOU! I hear you,BeccaBaby, because I've been there EXACTLY,so I know how you feel.My cat Molly had a sister I had to give up because of financial reasons, and Molly herself was hidden for so long,I'm sure that this was what sent her nervousness into gear(She takes Prozac),and I feel so guilty about that now,but there's no going back.I now live with my sister, and pets are allowed free of charge here,so we're better.Thank you for your story,it touched my heart.*
