mine does the exact same thing (89 chevy 1500 pickup) TBI ... i found out that my catalytic converter
was plugged.. which wasnt allowing enough air flow.. telling the injectors to dump in more fuel. (Might be worth checking out)

It could be the automatic choke, check your vacuum lines, and also could be the air intake is blocked, not allowing enough air into the engine.

have same in g30 chassis, note oxygen sensor is at top of exhaust at thr 'y', no cat convert, oxy sensor is 1 wire, ie , no sensor ground wire, ; ground for oxy sensor must be thru exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold, not smart, late oxy sensors have as much as 4 wires, 1-oxy siginal, 2-oxy sig ground, 3- 12 vdc heater, 4- 12vdc heater ground, , oxy sensor does not work if its temp is below 700deg f , , i am going to attach / clamp a wire to metal body of oxy sensor and run it to ecu ground, then wrap exhaust pipes from iron manifold to 'y' and past oxy sensor to insure 'heat' gets to senor ,,,,, i think you may be able to install a 4 wire oxy and acomplish the same, , which i will do if the ground and wrap doesn't work, jaycar eletronics has a module to sense oxy voltage and display it in a series of leds for about $40, my e-mail= ssbdata@yahoo.com, , let me know if this helps , , cheers, , steve
