To identify the meter of a piece means to tell how the groups of beats are organized. One clue is to listen to the strong beat. It usually indicates the first beat of a meter and is the strongest beat. Then you count beats between the two strong beats and you can tell of the music moves in 4's. 3's. or 2's. Then the meters are 4/4, 3/4, or 2/4.
Just comes from practice. If you want to count changing meters listen to Between the Buried and Me. They are constantly changing meters because they are cool like that.
Listen to the bass guitar, kick and snare drum. They are the tell tale instruments of meter.
one word: METRONOME. They are infintely helpful.
Tap your toes.
tap you foot. if that doesn't work, tap you foot.
