her mum was probably one of those government tested spyfish that swam the oceans with mini cams on their backs, under acknowleged but vital to world peace, she's ok she's just doing what she's been trained for,don't worry:)
the hiding is natural, but to rarely come near the top is indicative of either contamination, poor pH, or improper temperature (cold). I'd check into those things, make sure everything is right including temp& that room temp isn't markedly cooler than the water temp, as this would then draw down the temp of the surface water.

I have a similar problem, suggestions include adding more hiding places and making sure the flow of water in your tank isnt too strong. Also tapping and banging the tank will scare them and teach them to be nervous of you. If you havent had them very long chances are though they just need to settle for awhile :)
