I worked as a dental hygienist and teacher. It is critical to respect the customs/beliefs of people because otherwise they will not follow a treatment plan and sometimes do not get better. The mind/body connection is amazing. People under less stress get better faster. It needs to be a part of staff meetings periodically. We had our boss's relatives talk to us. Our offices always shared cultural "etiquette" which was very helpful. One culture does not allow for a child's head to be touched as you may capture their spirit. Another does not want their photograph taken for the same reason. Many dental offices routinely do this-overriding the patients gentle refusal (their culture requires them not to make a scene, even if they are in pain). Another does not want their birthday celebrated because it makes the Spirit world more aware of you. All settings of care have a great responsibility to respect people who have entrusted us with their health and maybe their life.

Showing respect toward all individuals automatically fulfills diversity awareness in many valid ways.

[ I'm not trying to be flippant, even though it may sound that way. ]
