I think that politics uses religion as a backdrop(excuse) to initiate wars and conflicts when the underlying reason is power and control.
religion is a way to controll the masses (people)
I think religion has more of an effect on politics. My reasoning is as follows:
In God We Trust is the official motto of the United States and the U.S. state of Florida. The motto first appeared on a United States coin in 1864 during strong Christian sentiment emerging during the Civil War, but In God We Trust did not become the official U.S. national motto until after the passage of an Act of Congress in 1956.[1][2] It is codified as federal law in the United States Code at 36 U.S.C. § 302, which provides: "In God we trust" is the national motto".
Proposition 8 in California was defeated, mostly by the LDS and Christian groups, via funding and 'encouraging' their members to vote it down.
For some time, Christianity has been the largest religion in the USA. The founding fathers did not write Christianity or God into the Constitution. Yet now it is permeating much of our government. Separation of church and state? The line blurs more and more.
I think religion has a bigger effect on politics than the other way around.
Religion is a devolved version of politics.
Organized religions can act like vote banks. They have control over people. So politicians will always have an eye on them. This probably the easiest way to win an election. religious heads also will work with politcians to make sure their empire is strong and sustain. They huge politics also.
But there are several non organized religions which has nothing to do with politics
It mostly depends on where you live. In the northeast it religion has a lesser effect than in the south (US speaking) but in China religion has almost zero effect on politics and is even beaten down brutally. In China religion is illegal unless your religion is the Communist party, the CCP and you are shipped off to reeducation camps and tortured for your beliefs.
In the US religion is put up on pedestals depending on your religion and seen is something either glorious or villainous depending on which branch of the tree you happen to hang your cross or star or moon from.
