Can you sign onto Yahoo! Messenger without downloading the program? If so, how?

    You don't have to use Yahoo's software. Pidgin is free, and it works with all the messengers. It works on PCs, Macs, and Linux computers. You can have multiple accounts open at once in a single window if you like. The only downside is that it does not yet support cam, and file transfers don't work with Yahoo. There are no ads, and it is almost always faster than Yahoo's software. Chat room access is much easier.

    There are other good multi-platform, multi-messenger protocol messenger clients like Kopete.

    Yahoo! does provide a Java Version of their IM program.

    Simply go to http://messenger.yahoo.com/?i=1 and you will find a link at the very bottom of the screen that says "Launch Web Messenger"

    I don't know why they don't have that link a little better posted, but there it is none the less.

    I know Windows Live Messenger is able to hold IM's with friends. I was able to upload my own yahoo address as a sample to the service a few years ago. Add your friends to your WinLive Messenger account. I don't remember(and the rules might have changed.) if the service sends an invitation for the two of you to connect or not, but if so, let your friends know, for them to talk, they need to accept the message. Eventually, you'll BOTH be up and running an IM between the two of you.
