    You might try this it's old, but it used to work for me on win 95 and 98 (sometimes) might need a little touch up if you cut and paste ...

    comboosttime=8;(milliseconds)was 20
    commdrv30=false
    comirqsharing=0

    I believe you are referring to setting your analog modem to use a particular COM port. The number of "COM ports" or "serial ports" or "RS232 interfaces" on a computer vary but all ports above a certain number (4 on most computers?) are "virtual". Setting a modem to use a virtual port can lead to problems. The procedure to set a port in W98SE is explained here:

    You may not need to reset the com port number (if that can even be done) if you could be more specific with the problem. do you have a device that can only use a certain port? if not you should just configure the device to use com1 or com2.

    The com port usually refers to a serial (DB9) or USB (universal serial bus) although it can refer to any device that comunicates with the outside world (modems, NICs, parellel ports) you can email me with the details, and i would be more than happy to help.

    The only thing i can recommend based on the information supplied is: Upgrade your computer's OS to a newer version of windows. (XP, ME... on second thought, forget ME. that os is terrible.)
