  • Here is the way it works: If you apply for credit at, let's say, a furniture store the store runs a credit check and will get a score and the credit history. This is a pull that reduces your score (it does not reduce it by 5 pts, it varies). If that store runs your credit again within a short timeframe, no additional points are pulled. (Let's say you go to three furniture stores and apply for creidt at all of them, only one point reduction will occur). When you are pre-approved for credit, the credit card company has asked the bureas for demographic ranges, such as "give me a list of 35 - 40 year old married males with mortgages in the 200K - 300K range with a FICO score of 740 - 775". These pulls, since they are not specific, do not reduce your score.
