Help answer this question below.

For composition of an instrumental piece (projecting frustration and sadness) with a pattern/structure of "ABA" --- would it be more advisable for pattern "B" to have more tension or should it be calmer than pattern "A"?

    The way I've always looked at it is for the A sections to have the tension and then the B section is the release of tension.

    Another form you could use is to tell the story in a normal storytelling fashion (either using word or music) with the A sections teling the story and the B sections elaborating or emphasing the point, build up more tension with each new repirion of A and B and then finally release the tension n a big way by using a C section. For example: A A B A A B A A B C

    Optional: YOu could end with another A section as a "summary" to the whole song

    I think that the answer to that question depends on how you will be building the tension in the frustration section...

    I would probably make A be sadness
    and then for B I would use different motifs from the melody in A to go through a highly dissonant and rhythmic development retreating back to a sad, yet peaceful conclusion.
