Of course. The Bible states it clearly in Genesis.

Is there really traditional Christianity and modern Christianity? Either you're a true Christian who believes every single word of the Bible and you love God with all your heart or you're not.

    I believe that is what Genesis 1:6-8,16 says that God created the heavens and the stars. I do not know if it says he created the universe specifically, but I believe that he did. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Gen1:6-8;%2016;&version=49;31;16;47;51;

It doesn't matter what the bible says. It was written a very long time ago. It's a fairy tale. Religion is a way to control people and wealth. It's also the writer of their version of history. Remember, history is written by the winners of the wars. Wars are won by the people with the most wealth.

I don't have to believe that's what the Bible says. I know it.

I also know it gives two somewhat conflicting versions of creation - the order of things done is somewhat different.

But there is no reason for an intelligent, educated person to believe that both of these conflicting versions somehow were what actually happened.

    yup.

I've never really read the bible, so I have no comment. It seems safe to say that it probably says something along those lines, though.

The Bible's primary purpose is to teach us the truth about God and His (or Her) love for us and how we should love each other, not to teach facts about history or science.

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

I believe that "God created the universe, stars, earth and moon."

I also believe that Science is discovering God's Creation and possibly how He (or She) created the universe through the Big Bang.

The Big Bang theory lends support to the idea of creation ex nihilo ("out of nothing")

By the way, Georges Lemaître (1894–1966), a Belgian Catholic priest and professor of physics and astronomy, proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Lema%C3%AEtre

Here is a nice simple explanation of the Big Bang Theory: http://www.socyberty.com/Philosophy/The-Big-Bang-Theory-Simplified.212433

    With love in Christ.

(2 Timothy 3:16) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness,
This makes god the author and the writers mere penmen...
    so it is all true.

Yes. If you do not believe the entire Bible, then how do you decide what part to believe?

Yes I do. I already commented on the subject but I'll post it here as well.

Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

    Heavens with an "S".

"I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth; ) such a one caught up to the third heaven."
    ( II Corinthians 12:2)

Third heaven is God's abode. Heaven number three

"And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars." (Genesis 1:14-16) ( Outer space, heaven number 2)

"And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
    ( Genesis 1:7-8) "Heaven number 1"

The King James Bible says "heaven" singular. The NIV says "heavens", as does the NASB, ASB, Young's Literal Translation, Darby, English Standard Version, New Revised Standard Version, as well as several other versions. The one I find the most interesting and enlightening is the Stone Edition Hebrew Tanach. It too refers to "heavens" and not "heaven".

I would have to say that God created the "heavens" and the earth.

If you take all the factors that caused the "earth" to form as it did, where it did, and how it progressed as it did there had to be some form of intelligence to accomplish this feat. The Bible is an account of what happened but not what was taking place during each moment of creation.

If you accept what is known as the "Gap Theory" the earth as we know it was recreated not created as stated in Genesis 1:2 thru 2:25. A early indication of the recreation is seen in Gen. 1:28 when God said for the people to multiply and REPLENISH the earth. How can you replenish if something did not exist before?

A very good documentry can be seen about this at: The Privileged Planet http://www.illustramedia.com/tppinfo.htm
