  • "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." Revelation 13:18 666 is the number that God said would be the number of the Beast. Why this specific number? I don't know. Why does the normal person have 10 fingers? However, I suspect that this is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The followers of the Beast will probably addopt this number as a way of sticking it to Christians. They will take as their symbol as a way of saying that, "God is dead, your faith is in vain. See I have taken this symbol on me and nothing has happened to me." I could be wrong about this of course, but it is something to think about. *************** "smart9426: I somewhere that this number is on every barcode" That sounds to me like another one of those rumors with which conspiracy aficionados would come up.
  • Revelation 13:18 says that 666 is "the number of a man". What does this mean? The church that I was raised in believes that numbers in the Bible have meanings. Number 6 signifies imperfection because it is one less than 7, which is the number of perfection. Number 6 is also the number of Man, being made in the image of God, but not perfect like God. The number 3 means that something has been completely proven. Therefore three 6's means that the Beast has been completely proven to be imperfect, or that he is imperfect in every respect. This is important because the Beast claims to be God. His number of 666 shows that he is not.
  • Another answer to this that is being debated in the Christian community... Not sure it is true though. Just thought it was interesting. Each character of the Hebrew alphabet also has a numeric value. If you sum up the charaters in Nero's name, in Hebrew, they add up to 666.
  • To answer this, you MUST have some understanding of the original audience it was written for. The Hebrew culture placed great importance on symbols that represented God. Indeed, 7 was almost a 'holy' number to them because it represented God's perfection. Since 6 is short of this, it indicates man's imperfection. When Peter asked Jesus: "how many times must I forgive my brother? Seven times?"; Jesus responded: "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times." Why would they use the number seven if it had no significance? True, it has little significance to us, but it did to them. Considering that the book of Matthew, which this text comes from, was written by a Jew, for Jews, it is very pertinent. The Jews were God's original chosen people for thousands of years (and as wfbrad says, they still are chosen by Him), so if anybody knew Him and His ways, it would be the Jews. Therefore, it is worth considering the importance of the numbers.
  • It's mentioned in the bible, it's an imperfect number..etc., etc. but the fact is, it's all hokum! Superstition is a powerful concept and will probably never leave us. A number, symbol or flag means exactly what you want it to mean and no more. I recently bought a house which has the number 666. Not remarkable in itself.... but oddly enough, the mortgage closed on Friday the 13th!!! My logical mind tells me it's coincidence, but in the corner of my brain there's a small bit of dread... So far I haven't found a renter!!
  • It's important to know that Revelation was written in symbols--in a code that could eventually be figured out. The numbers are the easiest part of the code to break. If you set aside an hour or two, read Revelation through from start to finish with about twenty sheets of blank paper, and write down each verse with a number in it on a separate sheet for that number, you'll find they fall into categories. Every verse that has a three in it--or has a list of three things--refers to God. Every verse with a four, and every list of four, refers to the world. Three plus four, God plus man, is God's covenant (contract or agreement) with man, so every number seven or list of seven items refers to this agreement. Ten is the number of completeness, twelve the number of the church. When something is doubled or tripled it is carried out in two or three dimensions. Five is the number of human experience, usually suffering. 40 refers to tribulation. If seven is the number of the covenant, three and a half would be the number of the BROKEN covenant, that is, sin. Every time you find three and a half in any form (such as 42 months, or 1260 days) it refers to a sinful period. If seven is the number of the covenant, wouldn't six be a failed attempt to get there? Perhaps the devil's poor imitation of the covenant? In that case, 666 would be an attempt to achieve divine perfection, but wouldn't make it. There's a great book on exactly this subject, In Search of the Biblical Order by Jack Cascione. Perhaps you can get it at Amazon.com. Other parts of Revelation are also in code, but some other part of the Bible explains what the code means. For example, what are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? When Prof. Siegbert Becker pointed out that they are described in exactly the same order as the prophecies of Matthew 24, it all made sense. You just have to know the Bible really well before you venture to explain what Revelation means, which is probably why it's at the very end of the Bible so you'll read it last.
  • This number is given as his number in the book of Revelation. Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. No explanation of this number is given, and there has been much speculation throughout history about it. There are numerous theories, and I have no idea which is correct. I would say to just accept it as God revealed it in His Bible, and go on faith that it is what He says it is. A thoery that makes at least some sense to me is that man, like God is a trinity. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Man is body, soul and spirit. 7 is the number in the Bible that corresponds to perfection and purity. 6 falls short of 7. Man was created on the sixth day, in Genesis. Man always fall short of God's perfection and glory. "666 is the number of man", Fall short in spirit. Fall short in body. Fall short in the soul or 6th day body, 6th day spirit, and 6th day soul=666= falling short of 7, which is perfection. Johnster, You are right that without 6 there would be no seven. Extend that thought some. Without imperfection there would be no perfection. As wierd as it may seem, God did create ALL things. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Proverbs 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. The proverb says it plainly. God even made the wicked. God gave man the desire to aspire, we have to progress and grow, be it for good or for evil. He gave us the free will to choose our path. For our will to be free, we must have a choice. If there were no evil, and only good, what choice would we have? God as a loving father watches us through our lives as we make our choices, hoping against hope we make right decisions, but allowing us to choose, just as we as parents must some day let our kids choose their path. Did God create Lucifer? Yes Did God create Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, Ghengis Khan, and Napoleon? Yes Did God create the Pharaohs, Pharasees and Saduccees? Yes Romans 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. God did not desire that anything be evil, but allowed men and angels the choice. Lucifer made himself evil by his choice, and so does man. God created the option for us. God's perfection was wisdom to give a choice to us, that we could choose good, eschew evil, and love Him more perfectly, because we choose to. It is perfect wisdom to create the choice, and is testimony to God's worthiness to be God. He does not want robots, but He wants love from those who are lovers by choice. Is it imperfection to create imperfection? Not at all, it is the epitomy of perfection.
  • The birth date of the physical inbodyment of the beast. 666*3=1998 the reason times 3 I that the 6 is presented 3 times so taking the whole # 666 and multiply it by 3 and you have 1998 coincident I think not
  • Numbers have been used to imply certain characteristics throughout history. Even today they are used, in the same way as it was done by the writers of the Bible. For example a person could say "you are number one", and aside form the obvious numerical value or a position as first in order, there is an added connotation, which I can not repeat here, kids and all... Similarly you could say "she is a 10", signifying physical perfection, as it was also used by the Bible writers to imply physical perfection or completeness. In the Bible it was common to use the number seven to represent spiritual perfection, or spiritual completeness. For example in these verses: (Genesis 4:15) . . .“For that reason anyone killing Cain must suffer vengeance seven times.”. . . (Psalm 12:6) 6 The sayings of Jehovah are pure sayings, As silver refined in a smelting furnace of earth, clarified seven times. . . (Matthew 18:21-22) . . .“Lord, how many times is my brother to sin against me and am I to forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him: “I say to you, not, Up to seven times, but, Up to seventy-seven times. Note in the last one, where seven is used to represent complete forgiveness, and then is used twice as seventy-seven, that the forgiveness was to extend further than just forgiveness, but we are to actually love those doing evil against us. (Luke 6:27-30) It represents an order of magnitude, that while we completely forgive someone, we can do so more fully, and increase in our forgiveness. How? By not just forgiving because it is required of us, but actually seeking it out and making it our desire to do this, to love the commandments of God and seek to do them out of loyalty, not because we are compelled to by fear of retribution. So how does this apply to the number of the beast? If I were to say "she is a 9", it would be understood that I imply someone approaches physical perfection, but does not attain it. Not bad in a physical sense, but in a spiritual sense this would mean falling short of the mark, or sinning. Thus six means spiritual imperfection, or sin. The repetition of the number means this imperfection is systemic, it is more than simple sin, it is the willful sin born of rebellion against God, the desire to do what is wrong knowing that it is wrong, and the hate for things that are good. It is complete and total imperfection, in every aspect, and the desire to lead others into this rebellion.
  • Here is an atempt to take away the myth of Evil and Good Numbers and Explain ! The Key to The Numbers of The Beast 2*3*3*37=666 and 2*2*7*11=616 Is The Positive Natural Integer Six(6) The Holy Numbers of God is Three(3) and Seven(7)accordingly to Moses Writtingsin The Genesis 1600 B.C. • It comes from the book of Revelation in the bible.... "Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six." (Revelation 13:16-18 RSV) Therefore the number 666 is associated with the beast or devil.
  • One thing it relates to is 668. That's the Neighbor of The Beast!
  • "The Mark of the Beast" http://www.av1611.org/666/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast
  • 666 was created by the babylonians along with numbers for their 36 other gods. Their 666 was considered the 37th god, aka the sun god. They believed that wearing an amulet with a number for each of their gods would protect them from being struck down by any of them. The amulets were arranged in a 6x6 matrix where each row and column would add up to 111, the total of all the numbers added together being 666. In summary, the number '666' is actually a number of protection against who the babylonians believed to be the most powerful of the gods...later labeled as the devil. 06 32 03 34 35 01 07 11 27 28 08 30 19 14 16 15 23 24 18 20 22 21 17 13 25 29 10 09 26 12 36 05 33 04 02 31
  • What the Bible is saying is that the future antichrist will have the name that when it is written in Greek, its numeric equivaliency is to be 666.
  • in the book of revaltion, the auther said that the beast was going to mark everyone's head or palm. That pledges aleigence to him, and in revalation, it is listed that the anti-christ will "take over the world" and you wouldn't be alowed to buy things or trade things, unless you pledged aleigence to the anti-christs. Personaly, i'd rather die in Christ than pledge to the Beasts
  • According to a recent research of the Oxford University, the original number of the Beast would probably rather have been 616. The number 666 would have been adopted later for "aesthetic" reasons: "In May 2005, it was reported that scholars at Oxford University using advanced imaging techniques had been able to read previously illegible portions of the earliest known record of the Book of Revelation, from the Oxyrhynchus site, Papyrus 115 or P115, dating to the mid to late third century. The fragment gives the Number of the Beast as 616 (chi, iota, stigma), rather than the majority text 666 (chi, xi, stigma). The other early witness Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (C) has it written in full: hexakosiai deka hex(lit. six hundred sixteen). Significantly, P115 aligns with Codex Alexandrinus (A) and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (C) which are generally regarded as providing the best testimony to Revelation. Thus, P115 has superior testimony to that of P47 which aligns with Codex Sinaiticus and together form the second-best witness to the Book of Revelation. This has led some scholars to conclude that 616 is the original number of the beast." ""The figure 616 is given in one of the two best manuscripts, C (Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus, Paris), by the Latin version of Tyconius (DCXVI, ed. Souter in the Journal of Theology, SE, April 1913), and by an ancient Armenian version (ed. Conybaere, 1907). Irenaeus knew about it [the 616 reading], but did not adopt it (Haer. v.30,3), Jerome adopted it (De Monogramm., ed. Dom G Morin in the Rev. Benedictine, 1903). It is probably original. The number 666 has been substituted for 616 either by analogy with 888, the [Greek] number of Jesus (Deissmann), or because it is a triangular number, the sum of the first 36 numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6...+36 = 666)". • "Jesus" (Iexus or Iesus I think) is Greek and the numerical eq is 888 (a perfect tone in music). 666 would be a perfect fifth. I would be careful taking any literal interpretation of 666 or its meaning. For 400-500 years Revelation was in and out of the cannon depending on which group/council was in power. There are many astro-theological/gnostic esoteric images painted in the book.
  • Maybe the beast is stupid. He/she needs a simple # to remember. lol
  • 6 is the number of a Man, 3 the Holy Trinity and 666.. Man becoming God.
  • Tarsus is 666 It seems that many new things, especially those involving "non-human" technology scare those who are somewhat ignorant and suspicious of anything outside their own carefully constructed culture. We can remember not long ago when bar-codes were proclaimed to be part of the "beast system" and before that social security numbers were seen to be part of a devilish plan of subjugation. Most recent to this list of demonic devices is the Internet. This is based on a decoding of the acronym, www featured as part of an URL, the uniform resource location, that is, the address of a computer serving information across a world wide network of computers. And this is based on an ancient code system called gematria. According to the recent theory, World Wide Web, that is www, stands for 666. They correctly refer to the fact that the Semitic equivalent to the English language's 'w' is the Hebrew character 'waw'. And as each character of the Hebrew alef-bet (alphabet, if you will) can also double as a numeral, waw does have a number value of 6 as it is the sixth character of the alef-bet. To someone who does not understand gematria or Hebrew numbering conventions, www, or we should say, waw-waw-waw, would appear to be the number 666. But this is not the case at all. Once numbering goes past 20, it jumps for each letter. Also, in gematria, the characters are added up to get a number.
  • "It is the number of a human, and his number is 666." This may be a gematrial riddle for his name. It might also mean that all humans will have numbers, and his is 666. By the way, Papyrus 115 does not read "616," but actually reads "666 or 616." Yes, it conflates the two major readings rather than make a commitment. Codex Alexandrinus ("A") reads 666 with the words spelled out.- hexakosioi hexeekonta hex" Codex C reads 616 with the words spelled out- hexakosioi deka hex" Papyrus 47 reads 666. The evidence for 666 being the correct reading is overwhelming. For the latest, complete and very detailed info on this, download this pdf file: http://www.bibletranslation.ws/trans/revwgrk.pdf That is the whole book of Revelation in Greek and English. Be warned that it is large; almost 2 MB.
  • Because the bible says so. Duh. Who's going to argue with the bible?
