I was 12, and it came on the news. images of the students running out of the school with their hands on their heads, ambulances, news reporters, and one broke down in tears, the term "trench coat mafia" unknown casualties. patrick ireland, a young teenage boy, bleeding and visually not fully conscious, tumbling out of a broken window, false reports of a pair of twins killed, expecting about 30 deaths...this was the first school shooting which was in progress as the world watched, or at least by the time the news was airing this story, it was uncertain what the shooters were doing, when most likely by that time, they had already committed suicide. by the end of the night (i believe) photos of the shooters were broadcast--smiling young boys. clean cut looking boys. defeating our bias opinion of the white suburban teenager. "the monsters next store"...the news unfolded into further detail, and i remember just crying. no child should have to go to school and take the initiative to take their free time to go to the library, and not come out alive. there are alternatives when it comes to people owning guns for self defense. for the love of god there should be stricter gun laws. thank god that most of their bombs malfunctioned and only caused little fires. it stuck with me ever since. here i am, almost 25, i have reached out to some of the parents of the victims to tell them how they are always in my prayers. all the students have grown now, with that haunting memory. even one girl who attended columbine during the massacre, later attended virginia tech, and also witnessed the shooting there. although i find something fishy about michael moore: bowling for columbine proved the point--NO CHILD SHOULD EVER HAVE ACCESS TO A GUN!
