In short....you can't. CD-RW's have a design much different from standard CD's, and CD-R's. CD-RW's use a surface alloy that liquifes when exposed to high temperatures. This alloy also has the property that it changes from opaque to reflective depending on the amount of heat it is exposed to. Because of it's unique design, CD-players must be specifically manufactured to be compatable with this technology. Many are not due to some combination of practical/economical reasons. CD-R's have virtually no compatability problems at all however. Stick to CD-R's for burning audio CD's and you shouldn't have any problems :)

you could get a part fitted somewhere that enables it to read them

don't use those brands? If it doesnt work with ANY rewritable disks, then you can't make it work. It has something to do with the way the laser reads a RW disk instead of an R or ROM disk. I think this is a problem mostly with older (or cheaper) CD players. If you're looking for a new one, it will say if it can read CD-RW disks.
