  • It sounds to me like the crews of ships which are potential targets for pirates should be equipped with something like this: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/systems/m242.htm Give the crew training and the authority to blast pirates out of the water before they get a chance to board.
  • Time to start using Conveys again and use Destroyers with Snipers problem solved.
  • The Somali pirates are a disorganized crew at best. It is unlikely that anyone of them can speak for the others. Beyond that, they have been allowed to engage in their activities for this long because they have been (mostly) non violent. Indeed, some of their actions have been comical. One pirate crew attacked a ship in their bare feet, only to discover the crew had locked themselves in and covered the decks with broken glass. The Pirates agreed to leave, asking only for shoes. I suspect that the age of piracy is waning. Tolerance is diminished, public opinion is strongly against them, and Blackwater has a maritime security division. Expect insurance companies to be less accepting, and more crews to be armed.
  • Be prepared.
  • We should tell them that if they kill any of pur people that will will kill all of them. give them the same treatment. If the US starts giving backf to those nuts then they will stop acting like America is chickens.
  • What comes around goes around! Kill all pirates. Anyone tries to board a ship unwelcome they shall be terminated!
  • I frankly don't care what "Somali pirates" say they are going to do. They chose to commit a crime, paid for it, and now they are whining about justice. What if they had killed their hostage - what "justice" would he have received? I have 0% sympathy for the pirates. Let them declare anything they'd like.
  • Remember that you read it here first. My guess is that we already have a submarine in the area. The pirates won't know what to do!
  • Comments like that are just going to get a lot of would be pirates killed.
  • Well, that strategy won't work, for reasons that will be obvious if the pirates try to work it out with paper and pencil. The moment the hostages are dead, the foreign navies have no incentive to let the pirates live. Essentially it becomes warfare between well-equipped and determined international navies, vs. opportunistic, disorganized, and ill-equipped pirates. Also, his argument misses a key point: the U.S. Navy didn't attack in a way which would allow the hostages to be killed. They sat there quietly, biding their time and negotiating, until the opportunity to kill all 3 pirates at once appeared. In general, a professional Navy isn't going to attack the pirates unless they're reasonably certain of securing the hostage's release.
  • It's only to be expected that this would be their reaction to being attacked. The pirates are dirt poor and have nothing to lose, which is why they turned to piracy in the first place. If they DO start this practise, it will result in the captives being more aggressive in repelling or resisting the pirates as they will have nothing to lose. The pirates, on the other hand, will suffer more losses of their own crew as the original occupants of the vessels will become more violent towards them, making for fewer pirates on board and therefore less control of the ship and its crew. It's a proud boast, but not one likely to be successful in achieving their aims.
  • If the pirates wish to escalate to a murderous band then there will be no mercy shown them at all. remember that on the high seas there are fewer laws to govern what goes on beyond coastal waters. If the Pirates now choose to live by the sword, we will find they are poorly equipped to survive.
  • I reckon if they actually do kill an American that he will be the last one they ever kill.
  • Given who is making the statement I am not surprised. The pirates found a motherlode and have been successful until now. They will finally pay for their choices.
  • That was their stance before this rescue, that's why they have guns and they aim them at people.
  • Somali Pirates can't fight any organized navy. Talk like that is just rhetoric.
