I don't fully subscribe to the Malthusian Catastrophe idea. It has failed on numerous predictive occasions. That said it should be noted that we can't continue to increase our population forever at least not if we are living on limited space such as the Earth. That much is obvious. So it is an issue but one that sometimes gets overstated. Certainly Malthus got it wrong. There will be a limit and what that limit is is the question. It would appear that the best solution is education and decent living conditions. That tends to reduce population expansion. Government intervention I disagree with on principle. Regarding the actual quote it is quite amusing. I like Sir David.

He is an intelligent man. Humanity consumes, and destroys what it can't consume.

With most complicated issues, the more people involved, the harder it is to get common ground to solve a problem. Look at the views on "Global Warming".

Sir David is wise...and very correct.

I don't get it. Please explain the quote to me.

This statement would definitely apply to air pollution and automobile emissions. Fewer is better, more is worse.
