You're reading I have a PC boot problem. When I switch on my computer the lights on the CD Drive and DVD Drive repeatedly flash alternately. From time to time the hard drive light flashes. This can carry on for about ten minutes when eventually the computer starts up.

That's likely to be the correct answer.

Thanks very much. The BIOS was looking for a CD first. I changed it and everything is working fine. Thanks again.

It still shouldn't take 10 minutes unless someone is leaving a cd or dvd in the drives. You ought to still get a relatively quick boot with the boot order set to an optical drive first unless there is a disk in the drive.

24 hours later and the same thing's happening. Boot sequence is HDD then CD with other options disabled. I've admitted defeat and taken it to the shop.

Either its a hardware problem then, or you have some kind of software corruption, maybe a virus. Make sure you back up all your files before it goes to the shop.

There is simple battery on every motherboard. When it dies your BIOS settings get reset to defaults. I think the battery on your motherboard is dead and needs to be replaced. This is likely to be the reason your setting got reset.

Not the issue, Anon..it's the boot time that's the problem...read the question.
