Question

Help answer this question below.

Are we as a society too quick to sue when we fall at a shop or are otherwise slightly injured or inconvenienced? Are we too concerned with trying to blame others & grab money instead of taking responsibility for ourselves? I think so..

It has become obvious to most of us that business people don't care about safety for the customer unless they are forced to. If they would take responsibility for their workplace in the first place, this wouldn't happen.

The cost of medical care has gotten so high, and so many people are not covered by insurance, it has become necessary to recover damages from the injury.

There are some who take advantage of the lawsuit courts, but there are also businesses that take advantage of the customers, so it's not all greed.

I can tell that most of these other people have not been hurt through no fault of their own, and have not had to resort to the courts for relief. You have to go to court to force the owners to pay for something when it is their fault.

    Its still Ridiculous

Sometimes yes. Albeit there are legitimate claims----there are thousands more that are not. Some fake it. Some are hurt but not to the tune of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. And then there are the true ones who are hurt badly which was caused by the carelessness of a company or person. They definitely deserve compensation.

First time I went to Europe, I was amazed that all these towers, ruins, drop-offs WEREN'T surrounded with fences, as they would be in the U.S.
In the U.S. we're obsessed with protecting people from hurting themselves, as if we're all children. That's created a vicious circle where people GROW UP expecting some outside source to protect us. Even from such stupid things as hot coffee or falling into a construction hole (or into the Grand Canyon).
I don't know if the chicken or the egg came first -- if a sue-happy nation begat the clueless people, or vice-versa, but there you are.

    No, I disagree.

There is a small minority of people that do see any accident as a way to a 'fast buck'.

But the pundits and politicians who thump the tub for tort reform typically neglect to mention that 90% of all civil litigation is companies suing other companies.

Unfortunately, our media seizes upon (and radically distorts) such stories as the woman who received THIRD DEGREE BURNS from a cup of McDonald's coffee and who initially sued ONLY for the cost of her medical bills. She received a multi-million dollar judgment because McDonald's negotiated in bad faith. It was punitive damages to discourage other companies from doing the same thing.

If anyone can show me a newspaper headline that says "Justice System Working as Intended, Judge Throws Out Several Frivolous Lawsuits", I'd like to see it.
