Distrust of gubment sure seems to be a hallmark. THe odd thing is that the last administration, supposedly a conservative one. wanted so much control over and secrecy of government.

Yeah, that comes pretty close to what I observe. Not at all what I glean from a dictionary definition of the word. I don't think today's far right that is taking over the Republican party is conservative at all. I think they are radicals.

I'd say preferring past solutions where possible and treadng carefully where change is needed is reasoned conservatism. But insisting that only past solutions be applied when new challenges arise is a pitfall new conservatism seems to have stumbled into.

The odd thing is that many who call themselves conservative today are pushing an agenda which is hardly conservative. Secession from the union, armed insurrection, abolishing most of the Federal Government, doing away with a central banking system, setting up 50 independent, potentially warring soverign states. That's whack job stuff. It's as radical as you can get.

Just reading John Dean's Conservatives Without Conscience. Dean, of course, was a classical intellectual conservative in the Nixon Administration, but since has become dismayed with how conservatism has lost its way. He struggles in the first chapter with defining the word, and comes to exactly that conclusion.

Only the least patriotic among us would claim that their group, and no other Americans, are patriotic. Nothing could be further from the ideals this nation was founded on and still, to most of us, represents.
