  • The NRA would come down on you like a house of bricks and crush you my friend. Nice thought, though. If we lived in a free country it would be good. However, the NRA owns congress lock, stock and barrel and they are all for freedom to purchase whatever the he** you want when the he** you want by whomever wants to do so..after all, ya know, they are all about the Right to Arm Bears, dontcha know?
  • criminals don't really follow laws anyway, so having more restrictions doesn't make sense. I do advocate the restriction of the purchase of certain types of guns. I don't really feel the need for any average person to have a missile launcher. LOL
  • No. The lowest common denominator should not be used to govern the honest majority.
  • We are fighting a losing battle. As long as the criminals can do as they please, the law-abiders of our population will never be able to adequately protect themselves. I don't want an uzi. I NEED one.
  • A well-armed society is a polite society. The problem with guns in the United States is their combination with a vicious, racist, oppressive culture which condones and permits the impoverishment and desperation of vast numbers of millions of people while simultaneously expressing contempt for their condition. Switzerland has no standing army; every family is required by law to own a fully automatic machinegun. Yet there is very little gun crime in Switzerland. Why? Because the Swiss have a sane and humane system of social services for people in need. I believe it is not only the right but the responsibility of people to possess firearms. If you do not possess the means of defending yourself, then you force others to do it for you. And as H.L Mencken wrote, "I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave." The best way to remove this "loophole" is to make gun ownership freely available to all, and mandatory.
  • Criminals will have guns no matter how many laws there are. We have enough laws not. Let it be.
  • I couldn't agree more. along with your H.L Mencken quote goes another from the writings of Ben Franklin; "Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither." He aid this many times, and in many ways but the thrust is always the same.
  • A simple preregistration could solve this whole problem. If you intend to buy a gun from the gun show preregister and get a background check done. If you're just interested in what might be there, go, enjoy. I'm very much pro-guns, but there is no reason to bring that many guns together for sale on a cash only basis. In every single state you are required to show ID to buy a gun and the sale is recorded. Handguns usually have waiting periods and background checks unless you have a valid concealed permit that checks out with the FBI. The change isn't anything new, it's applying the current laws.
  • What gun show loophole? Are you talking about the fact that most states permit the transfer of firearms between family members without having to pay a fee? Or are you talking about the fact that most states permit the transfer of long guns (rifles and shotguns) between private citizens without paying a fee? Since probably more than 95% of the vendors at any gun show are FFL holders (Federal Firearm License) they always as dealers, run background checks. "Gun Show Loophole" is the 'PC' media friendly way of saying law abiding citizens can transfer firearm ownership without paying fees and taxes to the government.
  • Jim, nothing personal but this is how the anti gun people spread their lies. Most people don't even know what their rights are as a citizen of this country so it's easy for them to use the left run media organizations like CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN to spread their lies about guns. Do me and yourself a favor,The next time a gun show comes to your town......GO and see for yourself. Walk around the tables and ask questions or better yet, try to buy agun in there without an id. OH and if you are thinking about a nice AR15 or an AK, you better take along two forms of ID and make sure onehas a picture and the secomd has to match the addy on the first. Do this and report back with your findings, PLEASE. OH, if you are strapped for cash e-mail me your addy and I'll see to it that the $7 gate fee gets in the mail to you pronto.
  • Instead of "Should we close it?", maybe we ought to ask ourselves, "Why is the gun loophole still open?" "The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has identified gun shows as the source of more than 30% of all illegally trafficked guns in the country. Those are the guns most likely to be used in crimes -- and to kill innocent people, including police officers. On Oct. 7th, NY City released the results of a multi-state investigation into this activity: "Gun Show Undercover." They sent investigators with hidden cameras to seven gun shows across Ohio, Tennessee and Nevada, and found out just how easy it is for criminals and the mentally ill to walk in and buy guns -- no questions asked. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has identified gun shows as the source of more than 30% of all illegally trafficked guns in the country. Those are the guns most likely to be used in crimes -- and to kill innocent people, including police officers. Congress should pass legislation requiring that all sales at gun shows be subject to criminal background checks -- a measure that has the support of Sen. John McCain, President Obama and 83% of gun owners. It is also time for Congress to support the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) with the resources it needs to crack down on illegal sales at gun shows. The vast majority of gun buyers at gun shows are law abiding citizens. Closing the gun show loophole and increasing resources to help ATF enforce the laws will not detract from anyone's Second Amendment rights. What it will do is send the message that criminals are not welcome at gun shows." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-bloomberg/gun-show-undercover_b_312339.html
  • Everytime I've been to a gun show and bought a gun, I've had to have my background checked, my thumbprints taken, and I've had to present ID and fill out the appropriate ATF forms. The private sales that don't require all that can be carried out anywhere, not just at gunshows, and it's well known that ATF agents and law enforcement prowl around gunshows all the time. The "gun show loophole" is media hyperbole.
  • I have owned guns myself, I have traded them off for other guns at times in my life and I once bought a gun at a gun show. That said, we should close the "gun show" loophole - however private non commercial gun sales between individuals should not be regulated. People have a right to own firearms - but gun merchants everywhere should all abide by the same rules as the larger brick and mortar stores. And in this age of portable computers there's no reason why a sales booth at a gun show can't do the paperwork right then and there to sell a gun to someone.
