I'm in a graduate program in renewable energy engineering here in Germany at present, and there are some students from Asia in the program also.

Additionally, for six weeks in the Department of Energy Efficiency Conversion in the electrical engineering school here, we have a few Chinese visting professors joining us in our studies. These are people who are relatively young, yet have already worked hard to earn PhD's in power electronics.

The rates of coal-powered power plants being constructed in China however are amazing. "China's estimated rise in electricity demand by 2050 requires four 300MW power stations built every week for 45 years". (Time magazine, April 2006). However, coal is plentiful and cheap, so there is a good chance of convincing people to burn 20% more to provide the necessary energy for carbon capture and sequestration, or other cleaner coal technologies. http://sequestration.mit.edu/

And like the above link suggests, Renewable energies, carbon capture and sequestration, and higher efficiency across the board can all come together to be parts of the solution.

    Do I believe they will?

    Absolutely!

I've met too many committed people highly skilled working in these areas to believe otherwise.

Not logically, no we cannot. And good luck trying. They run things their way over there. Not all that dissimilar to the US. I'm sure they have a crack team of scientists arriving at the conclusion that either A) the world was going to heat up anyway, B) The media is overblowing it or C) that it's America's fault.
