A horcrux is an object which encases part of a wizards soul.
To split their soul they must kill another (or a number) of people.
These objects can be anything that the wizard chooses.

A horcrux is an enchanted item, picked prior to enchantment and holding some significance for the picker, that is used to hold a part of that persons soul; specificially as a means of hopefully defying death.
