yep. I have heard my 25 y.o. nephew changed his speaking from California dude to a North Carolinian since he moved 8 years ago.

I pick up the accents of the people I'm around. After about an hour I will unconsciously pick up the accent of who I'm talking with. More so with Australian that any other.

Yes, because once you become part of a community, you want to mingle with everyone else and feel as "part of the family". If you want to be treated as "one of them", you have to sound like them. It happens quite often.
