In Sweden, some people believe in a sea-monster in the lake Storsjön (translates as Big Lake). There are researchers investigating the seamonster, and they have even been made fun of on a swedish TV-channel. Some other lakes are also thought to be the home of sea monsters. In old times when most people were farmers, people believed in the Little people/brownies whatever you wanna call it. They were called tomtar (/plural form of tomte). The swedish word for "property" is also tomt, and this is because it was believed that there lived a tomte on each property. Some people see these creatures and believe in them even today. Once I was on the train in southern Sweden between Simrishamn and Malmö. On the train I began speak to a young lady who were on her way to a nightclub in Malmö. I told her that these creatures really existed, and she replied to me that she did too and told me she had once seen a tomte as a child. In the saami culture in the northernmost part of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia, there once was the belief in stalo, a troll/giant like being, but I hardly think anyone believe in that today. There are also the belief in a spirit being in the form of a young girl followed by a reindeer horde. Some saami people who lived in the 19th century claimed to have seen her.
more & more people are believing in the North American bigfoot -- whether in the northwest, eastern Texas, California, etc.
also the Lake Champlain monster in the world "monster belt" is pretty compelling. Canada also has the Okopogo monster. (Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Russia's Lake Baikal all also have monster myths)
