  • This is pretty straightforward, but you will need a metal-cutting tool like an angle grinder or a reciprocating saw with a metal blade. Jack the front of the vehicle up and remove the wheels. Hopefully, you know what the shock absorbers look like. There will be two bolts at the bottom. Those come off quite easily. You will see a mounting at the top where the shock absorber shaft is bolted to the body via a set of rubber bushings, all secured with a nut. http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/shocks/12s.jpg You will NOT be able to get this nut off because the shock shaft turns when you try. There is a squared-off portion at the top that you are supposed to hold while your try to remove the nut, but this will round off and you will NOT be able to hold it. So, take your cutting tool and CUT through the nut and shock shaft. Note how the rubber bushings and washers are installed. Remove the old shock absorber. Installation is the reverse of removal. Remember to hold the shock shaft as you tighten the top nut (this works when the parts are new). Repeat on the other side. Good luck.
