I personally don't mind R-rated films (though it's amazing what you can get away with in an R-rated film these days), but I also think a lot of the graphic depictions, be they of sex or violence, would probably work better if they were insinuated.

As for director's cuts, I find they usually consist of every last foot of film shot, which was originally cut out because it didn't need to be there. Director's cuts should be called "I'm So Great That Every Second I Shoot Is Golden -- Even If I Do Say So Myself" cuts.

I'd go for A. The R-rated theatrical release.

Often I see a movie I liked in the theater, only to go to the video store and find that they've added a bunch of crap that I don't care about. I don't want extra scenes, I don't want extra nudity, I want it the way I saw it.

Same thing goes for older movies that I liked, but then go to buy on DVD and find that they've added a bunch of extra scenes. I hate that. One movie that annoys me to no end for that reason is Empire Records. I love that movie. I own it on VHS. I wanted to buy it on DVD, but they have added some extra crap in it that I don't want. They called it the "fan version" or something. I am a fan, and I want the original!

    I want the original movie!

The reason I ask is because I often wished there were PG-13 Rated versions so that I can purchase it to own and share with my children with a clean conscience.

I do not personally like to watch rated R movies unless they are edited for television. There are a lot I would like to see, but I know are gratuitous in language and violence and sexual content, which would make just as good movies if they were edited down to PG-13.

I think that the Movie Companies should offer those options if they are going to re-cut the movie for the Unrated Versions or Director's Cuts... just to be fair.

    G'day JAMMCO,

    Thank you for your question.

I'd rather see the original release then the so-called directors cut although there is often a reason that the extra footage was left out in the first place.

I can see your point about a PG rated release although there is plenty of material made for a G and PG rating.

    Regards

I would rather see the original release (and if I like it, maybe check out the Directors Cut later on DVD).

Although, I have been burned by the Directors Cut before - Cinema Paradiso was such a nice movie that turned in to sheer torture to watch with the Directors Cut. I never even got to the end, it was so long.

I would see the original release, I'm old enough to be able to handle rated R movies.

I would see the PG-13. This is a question i have been asking myself. Is it possible that you can choose to see the movie you want in the rating you want? This has not ever occured to me until Bad Teacher which has 2 trailer versions,1 restricted. I always thought the rating was fixed and that's the way it would be offered. So i am not upset by a restricted movie, thinking that was it rating. Actually I would pick restricted over director's cut unrated.
In Donnie Darko i got to see the Director's cut and i thought it was more depressing and darker. So restricion does not always mean explicit. Because americans accept violence in movies more lots of pg 13 may have alot of violence and crime. I'd not pick and other movies like Erin Brokovich might get a restricted rating. Yet i think what was restricted about it
was the heavy intellectual plot about cancer and factory or corporation corruption relatedness which may go over the head of young persons. There was really no violence in the film and really not really explicit sex. Sometimes sex is more rawdy in children approved ratings. And i wouldn't want my child to see that. I don't find anything funny about degrading sex. Then movies that are more explicit in feelings and tasteful do get the high restricted ratings. So i'd rather choose for my kids. I suppose maybe implied Joseph Cotton movies might get a restricted rating- cause it is supposed to be about a seamy world, and kids should not be exposed to that, though there would not be much of violence shown or only implied sex. Yet the trailer restricted Bad Teacher- woudn't view it all is too explicit. So if there was a choice at the movies to see the restricted or the PG13 that might be good. Is there a choice? That is something i did not know. That there might be two versions when you go. And i'd like to know more about that. Or does it only apply to buying dvds when you can pick what rating you want same movie?

    This is a great question!
Um it's only an opinion though, but I think I would prefer to watch the Theatrical Release first follwed by the Director's Cut Version.
