They have them because they were some of the absolute best.

Haven't seen much of Laurence Olivier's films or don't remember. Out of the men, I would say that Spencer Tracy was my favorite. I loved Paul Newman with Elizabeth Taylor in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and "The Long Hot Summer" with Joanne Woodward. And, what would "Terms Of Endearment" and "The Shining" be without Jack Nicholson.

From the list of women, my pick is Meryl Streep. Katherine Hepburn was a great actress and I loved the old Bette Davis movies.

All fine actors, most all from a period when audiences visited cinemas to actually see a movie with a plot, to immerse themselves in a story and its characters. Off the top of my head, I think Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Depp, and most recently Will Smith could also stand the test of time. They really get into their roles too.

This is probably heresy and blasphemous but I'm not all that big a fan of Meryl Streep. There is always something cold and sharp-edged about her performances. Jack Nicholson is also kinda low on my list. The ones who have brought me the most enjoyment are Spencer Tracy, Paul Newman and Katharine Hepburn. Bette Davis always seemed on the verge of losing control and Sir Laurence Olivier was aloof and unaccessible. But Spence, Paul and Katie...there's a group I'd love to have known! :)
