Yes definitely. I would describe this kind of fundamentalist as one who takes her/his own thoughts seriously and literally. Met one recently over at yahoo Answers who liked to tell sincere questioners that Zen was the only path that makes any sense at all and that happiness was assured on the Zen path. This seems a real disservice to honest seekers and a stick in the eye of his own teacher and this centuries old tradition. I actually know another as well so the fundamentalist phenomena is not limited to Abrahamic faiths. He claims he's "planting seeds". Hello! Don't those happy Christians obnoxiously do that in "those poor 3rd world countries"? Definitely not an enlightened kind of pursuit in the name of enlightenment. Zen finds it's own way (in many forms) entirely without such as this.

This isn't any different from those guys dressed in suits knocking on your door or handing out tracts on the corner.

There is no such thing. Zen is above that sort of thing, since ours is clearly the best way. Anyone who disagrees will more than likely to go to zen hell when they die and suffer inexpressible levels of agonising pain for eternity - that's true zen justice.

    Funny you should ask.

Since I used to live in Japan, the answer is yes. I met a Zen monk doing standing meditation in the middle of a busy sidewalk. He was standing there stock still. Not even blinking though his eyes were somewhat open.

    He was very intimidating.

Yes, I have. It was in India, and they are rare, but they DO exist.
