Help answer this question below.
Yes. For most right handed people, non-dominant hand writing activates the right hemisphere of the brain. "The right brain "specializes" in visual/spatial perception, emotional expression, and intuitive abilities." Not only does non-dominant writing (as described above) activate this part of the brain (see: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10375672&dopt=Abstract), it also provides a therapeutic link to feelings, intuition, wisdom, and insight (see: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3934/is_199901/ai_n8830037/pg_7).
Kudos to rsr3004 for such a good answer!
I have never really studied it out, but I did teach myself to write left-handed, and I will tell you that its an exercise in patience and persistence (not to mention 'frustration') and your hand will probably get sore from the unaccustomed motions.
That said, I still think its worth it. It improves fine motor skills and evens out coordination, and if something happens to my right hand I can still write!
