Also believe it or not depending on the age of the child but some parents find that Bambi is terrifying for little kids. The opening scene shows Bambi's mother being killed by hunters and it is something which stays with many children.

Children can sometimes be scared by the weirdest things, and I remember my niece crying and being scared of ET, so there could be many surprising ones, but American Werewolf In London is one, or seeing Mickey Rourke's face in The Wrestler is another....

The Mirror.

I remember when I was a kid, I scared myself senseless by watching an HBO double feature of the first two Nightmare on Elm Streets. Hellraiser also gave me a few nightmares. I won't bother going into modern horror movies, because everyone else seems to have that covered pretty well.

the grudge 1,2,3 the unborn

Definetely Sam Raimi's 'Drag Me to Hell'. I'm a horror film fan and this one made me jump more than any other when I saw it at the cinema. Has a lot of parts that just creep up and jump out - and scare the bejesus out of you. The sound design is fantastic as well, which is what adds to the scare-factor. Has a lot of humour which adults pick up on but I think it would be scary for kids. Also The Exorcist. It was banned in the UK until recent years - but I saw a copy when I was young and it gave me nightmares for weeks.

I have few actually. I was "raised" on 'Nightmare on Elm Street', after which I was afraid to fall asleep (btw looking forward for a remake in Feb 2010), then is Child's Play and Funhouse.

First of all, i would never let my child watch movies like "Saw" or "Hostel"... But realy, REALY scary movie for a child to watch is "Child's Play". I remember when my younger brother was REALY scared during waching this movie, and i mean REEEAlY SCARED ;] But i woudn't show to my kids horrors just to scare them. For the young beginners i'd recommend "Are You Afraid of Thr Dark" (TV series) :)
